Planner Tabs in Private and Shared Channels in Microsoft Teams

📋 Planner Support for Private and Shared Channels in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft is expanding the integration of Microsoft Planner in Microsoft Teams. Planner can now be used as a tab in private and shared channels.

Teamsware provides an overview of this change, its impact, and what project teams should be aware of.

❓ What is changing?

Previously, Microsoft Planner was only available in standard channels. With this update, tasks can be planned and tracked directly within the channel where collaboration happens — including scenarios with restricted membership or cross‑organization collaboration.

👷‍♂️ What does this mean for project and team members?

The new functionality enables the following:

  • ✅ Planner can be added as a tab in private channels
  • ✅ Planner can be added as a tab in shared channels
  • ✅ Task planning directly within the relevant collaboration context
  • ✅ Suitable for teams with limited access or cross‑tenant collaboration

Planner automatically inherits the permissions of the respective channel. Only authorized users can see tasks and comments.

📅 When will this be available?

  • General Availability (Worldwide):
  • Rollout starts in mid‑May 2026
  • Expected to complete by late May 2026

📌 What exactly is changing?

  • Planner can be added via “+ Add a tab” in private and shared channels
  • Users can create a new plan or add an existing plan associated with the channel
  • No changes to Planner behavior in standard channels

🔐 Security & permissions

Planner automatically inherits:

  • Channel permissions
  • Existing Microsoft 365 compliance and security controls

No separate permission management is required within Planner.
